Germany sees surge in 2023 asylum applications

More people applied for asylum in Germany last year than at any time since 2016, according to the annual statistics published by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) on Monday.Some 329,000 people applied for asylum in Germany for the first time between the beginning of January and the end of December, which was about 50% more than in the previous year, German news agency (dpa) reported.’The asylum figures for 2023 show that we must consistently continue our course to limit irregular migration,’ Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in a statement.Recently, Germany introduced temporary border controls at its frontiers with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
