Trump: US President has right to have legal immunity

Former US President Donald Trump said that he is entitled to legal immunity for his actions during his presidency from 2017 to 2021.Trump's statement came following his attendance at an appeals court session in Washington, to argue that he should be granted immunity from prosecution on charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential elections, which current President Joe Biden won.’I feel that as president, you should have immunity, quite simply… You, as president, should be able to do your job’, Trump said after the session.Trump denied doing anything wrong during his presidency, as he is accused in four criminal cases, and is expected to be tried on March 4 on charges of trying to overturn the results of the presidential election he lost to President Joe Biden.Trump's lawyers say that Trump cannot be tried for trying to reverse the election results, due to his acquittal during the parliamentary impeachment proceedings over the attack on the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.The judge examining Trump's federal trial, Tanya Chutkan, rejected a request to confirm immunity last December, considering that there was no text protecting a former president from criminal prosecution. The session comes less than a week before the start of the Republican primary elections in the state of Iowa, where Trump is seeking the Republican Party nomination for the November 2024 elections.
